247 – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke for the first time on Tuesday (30) about the impasse involving the presidential election in Venezuela, held last Sunday (28). In a statement made in an exclusive interview at the Palácio da Alvorada with TV Centro América, the head of the Executive said that it is necessary to present the voting records to “resolve the political dispute” in the neighboring country. The records are detailed documents about the number of votes and the results in each ballot box.

On Sunday, the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Nicolás Maduro the winner of the election, with 51.2% of the votes, surpassing the opposition candidate, Edmundo González, who received 44%. However, the results are being contested by the Venezuelan right.

"It is normal to have a dispute. How do you resolve this dispute? Present the record. If there is any doubt in the record between the opposition and the situation, the opposition should file an appeal and wait for the judicial process. And there will be a decision that we must accept. I am convinced that it is a normal, calm process," said Lula.

The Brazilian president also conditioned the recognition of the Venezuelan president's victory on the presentation of the documents about the election results.

"Once the records are presented, and it is confirmed that the record is accurate, we all have the obligation to recognize the electoral result of Venezuela," he said.

"What is needed is for people who disagree to have the right to express themselves, to prove that they disagree, and the government has the right to prove that it is right," he continued. Amid the protests against Nicolás Maduro's victory, NGOs operating in Venezuela reported that four people have already died and another 44 have been injured.

During the interview, Lula also commented on the note released by the Workers' Party (PT) regarding Maduro's re-election.

"The PT recognized, the Workers' Party's note recognizes and praises the Venezuelan people for the peaceful elections that took place. And at the same time, it acknowledges that the electoral college, the electoral court, has already recognized Maduro as the winner, but the opposition has not yet. So, there is a process. There's nothing serious, nothing alarming," he said.
